چکیده

The concept of the long tail has recently been used to explain the phenomenon in e-commerce where the total volume of sales of the items in the tail is comparable to that of the most popular items. In the case of online book sales, the proportion of tail sales has been estimated using regression techniques on the assumption that the data obeys a power-law distribution. Here we propose a different technique for estimation based on a generative model of book sales that results in an asymptotic power-law distribution of sales, but which does not suffer from the problems related to power-law regression techniques. We show that the proportion of tail sales predicted is very sensitive to the estimated power-law exponent. In particular, if we assume that the power-law exponent of the cumulative distribution is closer to 1.1 rather than to 1.2 (estimates published in 2003, calculated using regression by two groups of researchers), then our computations suggest that the tail sales of Amazon.com, rather than being 40% as estimated by Brynjolfsson, Hu and Smith in 2003, are actually closer to 20%, the proportion estimated by its CEO.

The power-law tail exponent of income distributions

In this paper we tackle the problem of estimating the power-law tail exponent of income distributions by using the Hill’s estimator. A subsample semi-parametric bootstrap procedure minimizing the mean squared error is used to choose the power-law cutoff value optimally. This technique is applied to personal income data for Australia and Italy. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Power Law of Customers’ Expenditures in Convenience Stores

We can observe a power law in critical phenomena in natural sciences. Such a power law is also empirically exhibited in many economic phenomena. In one of the older studies conducted approximately 120 years ago, Pareto first reported that the probability density function of personal wealth in Italy follows a power law [1]. Following this research, the power law was also found to hold for city s...

Price fluctuations from the order book perspective - empirical facts and a simple model

Statistical properties of an order book and the effect they have on price dynamics were studied using the high-frequency NASDAQ Level II data. It was observed that the size distribution of marketable orders (transaction sizes) has power law tails with an exponent 1 + μmarket = 2.4 ± 0.1. The distribution of limit order sizes was found to be consistent with a power law with an exponent close to ...

Effects of Power-Law Distribution and Exponential with Uniform Pressures on Vibration Behavior of Reinforced Cylindrical Shell Made of Functionally Graded Materials under Symmetric Boundary Conditions

In this paper, the influence of the constituent volume fractions by changing the values of the power-law exponent with uniform pressure on the vibration frequencies of reinforced functionally graded cylindrical shells is studied. The FGM shell with ring is developed in accordance to the volume fraction law from two constituents namely stainless steel and nickel. These constituents are graded th...

Shelf space strategy in long-tail markets

The Internet is known to have had a powerful impact on on-line retailer strategies in markets characterised by long-tail distribution of sales [1]. Such retailers can exploit the long tail of the market, since they are effectively without physical limit on the number of choices on offer. Here we examine two extensions of this phenomenon. First, we introduce turnover into the long-tail distribut...
